History of Performer / Band

Crannóg Bheag is Reno's newest Irish band, having first assembled in September 2003 for the San Patricios commemoration at Bartley Ranch Park. Performing traditional tunes and contemporary Irish songs, the trio of Nora Fenlon, Kevin Lyons, and Carl Hylin have rapidly gained a following among local Irish music fans. Besides playing at the San Patricios event and at gatherings of the Sierra Nevada Celtic Society, Crannóg Bheag have performed at Foley's Irish Pub, John Ascuaga's Nugget, the Great Basin Brewery, and the Reno Celtic Celebration.

The lovely, silken-voiced Nora Fenlon originally hails from County Kilkenny. Raised in a musical family-fiddle-players, mostly-she took at an early age to singing, and then to the bodhrán. Having sung and played in pubs all over Ireland, she now graces our fair shores.

Every Irish band should have an Irish tenor. Kevin Lyons, born and raised in Dublin, is Crannóg Bheag's. He has performed around the world as a member of the Aer Lingus Choral Society, and is also a veteran of the Sierra Nevada Master Chorale. Kevin capably supplies Crannóg Bheag with guitar, as well as with vocals.

Coming from "County Honolulu," multi-instrumentalist Carl Hylin is the band's token Yank, but has been playing Irish music now for 20 years. This spring (2004) he took a silver medal playing hammered dulcimer at the CCE Midwest Fleadh Cheoil in Cincinnati, and in August entered the Irish national music competition in Clonmel, County Tipperary. Carl has warmed up for major artists such as Dave Brubeck, Nanci Griffith, and Emmy Lou Harris; and has been heard on the Irish national radio program "Ceili House." He also plays in the Middle-Eastern folk fusion band Slow Djinn Fez.
