History of Performer / Band |
Sophie has crafted an original sound
from elements of indie rock, jazz, pop, swing, folk,
and old country. Often minimalist and similar to the
finger-snapping style of Rickie Lee Jones, Sophie's
writing is inspired by such artists as Tori Amos, PJ
Harvey, Taj Mahal, Ani DiFranco, and Lily Tomlin.
Sophie's band—formerly the Probiotics now The Slowly Dying Death—adds an earthy, jazzy fullness using not only bass and
drums, but also violin, mandolin, washboard, kazoo,
and whatever else deems itself worthy of the cause.
Sophie's vocals are like spider webs, delicate but
strong, a mix between the soulful tenderness of Portishead's
Beth Gibbons and the sweet brightness of Frente's Angie
Heart. Her lyrics are at once whimsical, sarcastic,
dark, bitter, and funny.
Sophie has an unusually diverse fan
base ranging from emo kids to jazz enthusiasts. Whether
playing solo or with the band, Sophie has built a devoted
local fan base of finger-snappers and doo-wop-ers. |
