Kathleen Smith began garnering the attention of her peers and mentors when she took a turn from her theater studies to pursue music. Having studied classical piano and written poetry and short stories since a young age, Kathleen began writing songs after taking her first songwriting class at the University of Southern California. She then dedicated herself to the art of music, and songwriting in particular, taking every single songwriting class USC had to offer, and studying with some of the best pianists, composers and vocalists in town.
She has played around Los Angeles at venues including Genghis Cohen, Unurban Coffeehouse, the Tempest and even Catalina Jazz Club.
Her many musical and literary influences include Alanis Morissette, Morten Lauridsen, Thomas Newman, John Steinbeck, William Shakespeare, Billy Collins, Toni Morrisson, Stephen Dunn, Pablo Neruda, Barbra Kingsolver, Lisa Loeb, Sarah McLachlan, Cat Stevens, Madonna, Eve Ensler, Tony Kushner, John Irving, Nellee Hooper, Chopin, Bessie Smith, Incubus, Barbra Streisand, Johnny Mandel, Beethoven.
Kathleen’s music invites the listener on a melodic journey of love and loss. Her poetic lyrics and interesting stories are a defining characteristic of her musical style, while fans and critics alike praise her soul-baring honesty and image-filled poetry. |
